Chris Waddle names the one thing that Steven Bergwijn needs to work on after goal vs Man City

Former Tottenham midfielder Chris Waddle has said that new Spurs man Steven Bergwijn will leave fans frustrated with his lack of consistency.

The Dutchman became an instant hero with Tottenham fans after he found the net in stylish fashion during his debut in the 2-0 win over reigning Champions Manchester City.

The 22-year-old joined Spurs from Dutch side PSV Eindhoven for whom he scored five goals and provided 10 assists in 16 Eredivsie appearances so far this season.

Bergwijn completed a move to Tottenham in a deal worth around £26.7million before the deadline and was thrown straight into the starting 11 for Tottenham's Premier League game against Man City.

The midfielder was not eligible for the FA Cup replay against Southampton in the week, but could be back in the starting lineup for the match against Aston Villa after the winter break.

Speaking to the racing post, Waddle said that consistency could be one of the problems facing the new Spurs man.

"Bergwijn needs to add consistency to his game. You look at him and you see a player who’s good on the ball, can spot a pass, can go past players and can score goals," he said.

"So you’re immediately wondering why he's not been snapped up by a bigger club before. My sense is that he’ll drift out of games and that might frustrate fans. But if he can sustain his appetite – and with a place in the Holland squad to nail down before the Euros he will certainly be trying – then he’ll be a hit."
