Chris Waddle delivers honest Christian Eriksen verdict ahead of Tottenham's clash with Liverpool

Ex-Tottenham Hotspur star Chris Waddle believes the club made a mistake not tying down Christian Eriksen to a new contract.

Waddle believes that the midfielder wants to play, but is sitting on the bench waiting to be sold amid speculation that Real Madrid will attempt to sign the Dane in a cut-price deal when the January transfer window comes around.

The Madrid giants failed to sign Eriksen in the summer and do not want to miss out on the playmaker, whether it is a bid or a pre-contract agreement from January 1 that seals a deal.

With the futures of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen unclear, Spurs' start to the season has been heavily affected.

Mauricio Pochettino's men sit seventh in the Premier League standings, 13 points behind league-leaders Liverpool ahead of Sunday's clash at Anfield.

Waddle, speaking to the Racing Post, thinks Eriksen needs to be playing with the European Championships in mind.

“Quite what happens to Eriksen, I don't know. It looked as if he was going in the summer but it is not in his football interests to sit it out for the rest of the season.

“There would obviously be benefits for his bank balance as he could get a nice pot of gold, but it doesn't matter how talented you are if you are not playing, especially with the Euros just over six months away.

“He needs to be out there showing people what he can do, but Tottenham should have got it all sorted out a year ago.”
