Chris Thompson speaks on Dwayne Haskins-Redskins speculation

The subject of Dwayne Haskins and the Washington Redskins is an interesting one.

Redskins head coach Jay Gruden has made it pretty clear Haskins is the backup and he’d like to keep rolling with the veteran Case Keenum as the starter.

That has fueled some speculation — of course — that Gruden simply doesn’t think Haskins is ready, or even worse, the front office and coaching staff weren’t all on the same page.

But as seen above, running back Chris Thompson made a really good point: a lack of first-team reps for Haskins doesn’t imply any of those things. Gruden has a starter, so it wouldn’t make sense for a backup to eat into those snaps and disrupt game prep. It doesn’t really happen.

It is an important point to keep in mind when thinking about the situation. And funnily enough, Haskins got some first-team work Thursday even though Keenum is back and looking healthy.

Every team, player and coach is going to move at its own pace when it comes to handing the controls to a rookie. That the Redskins haven’t yet isn’t really an indictment on anyone.
