Chris Sutton slaughters Celtic board in furious response to 'idiot' fan calling for Neil Lennon sacking

Chris Sutton blasted the Celtic board for "disastrous" transfer windows as he responded to a Hoops fan calling for Neil Lennon 's head.

Sutton took exception to the caller on Radio 5 Live who said Celtic were "embarrassing" in Saturday's 2-1 Betfred Cup victory over Dunfermline in which the Pars took the champions to extra time.

The caller, from Glasgow, added: "There was no shape, no passion, nothing at all. Neil Lennon has to go now and the squad has to be looked at urgently.

"I think it has been a mistake to appoint Lennon, I would sack him now."

It comes after Celtic crashed out of the Champions League with a costly defeat to Cluj at Parkhead on Tuesday. Lennon was criticised for his team selection in which he left new signings Christopher Jullien and Boli Bolingoli on the bench and deployed playmaker Callum McGregor at left-back.

But former Celtic striker and Record Sport columnist Sutton - a team mate of Lennon's at Parkhead - launched a passionate defence of the Northern Irishman - and branded the caller an "idiot".

He responded: "No, I'm not going to let you finish.

"No passion? Rubbish. You're an idiot Scott.

"The board are to blame, in that the last two or three transfer windows have been a disaster.

"They need to invest in the playing squad.

"Neil Lennon did he make mistakes in the Champions League? Absolutely with the team selection.

"But to call for his head at this stage - you can't be sacking managers two or three or four games in."
