Chris Sutton roasts Ally McCoist's Celtic title claim and insists Rangers icon 'must be on the Bucky'

The 2019/20 campaign will forever be remembered as the season halted by a pandemic.

For some, that means free rein for asterisks aplenty and that old Scottish football phrase, "tainted titles".

But not for Chris Sutton.

The Celtic legend has shot down Ally McCoist 's claim that the Parkhead club's nine-in-a-row success will forever be fitted with one of those asterisks.

Rangers icon McCoist insists that's not to the detriment of Celtic's achievement, nor that of lower league winners Dundee United, Raith Rovers and Cove Rangers, but simply a recognition of the fact the season was called to a halt.

Sutton, however, took issue with McCoist speculating that Rangers may yet have overturned their rivals' 13 point advantage, as unlikely as it would have been.

"I think Ally's been on the Bucky, hasn't he? I don't know what he's talking about," Sutton said on our Record Celtic podcast, in a playful dig at his old BT Sport colleague.

"He just doesn't want to admit it, that Celtic have been the better team.

"I saw one of his quotes from Tuesday morning, he said: 'Could Rangers have caught up with Celtic? Absolutely.'

"I mean, what planet is he on? Really?

"People talk about asterisks, but there should be question marks - and this is what Rangers fans should be thinking - over what the hell happened in Dubai?

"There should be exclamation marks about Alfredo Morelos, the shape he was in after the winter break. Don't worry about asterisks.

"I was reading this morning, if you want to talk about asterisks, should Rangers have 54 titles?

"In the first season of the Scottish league in 1890-91, Rangers and Dumbarton shared the title, didn't they? But Dumbarton scored seven more goals.

"They didn't use that back then, they went to a play-off. But, therefore, maybe there should be an asterisk against Rangers for the first season?

"Why don't we ask Ally about that? It went to a play-off, they drew 2-2, I don't know who was administrator back then, but it didn't go to extra time or penalties - why not?

"I know it gets dark early in Scotland but just play it to a finish, use Golden Goal - what's wrong with them?"

McCoist admitted earlier on Tuesday he actually retains some sympathy for Celtic given they were not able to complete the remaining fixtures and lift the trophy in front of their fans.

He said on talkSPORT : "As well as offering congratulations to Celtic - you have to have a degree of sympathy as well.

"I've gone on record as saying, and I stand by it, if you're a Celtic player or a Celtic supporter, anyone involved with Celtic, you would have wanted to see the season finished. As did everybody else, because that's the only fair way to do it.

"It's through no fault of their own, absolutely through no fault of their own, that the season has finished early and they have been awarded the title in this manner.

"Listen, you have got to say Celtic have been the best team in the league this season by a considerable margin. That's the facts of the matter.

"They're 13 points clear,  Rangers  have got a game in hand. Could Rangers have caught them? Absolutely. Was it likely? No, not at all, and probably highly unlikely that Rangers caught them.

"The fact of the matter is they still could have caught them. The unfortunate thing for all the teams is the league campaign hasn't been given the opportunity to finish.

"They (all the league winners) will have an asterisk next to it, of course they will.

"Because you're not going to tell me you're not going to look back on this season and say they were awarded the title, they were awarded promotion. Of course they were.

"There is a massive difference between the use of the words 'asterisk' and 'tainted'. The title and the promotions aren't tainted because it's through no fault of their own, but you can't argue there will not be an asterisk.

"The asterisk will say, through no fault of their own, this season has been different."
