Chris Sutton questions whether Welsh clubs should be playing in English football leagues

Chris Sutton has risked the wrath of all Welsh club football supporters by questioning whether Cardiff City, Swansea City, Newport County and Wrexham should be in the Football League.

Sutton was speaking on BBC's 606 programme in the aftermath of Cardiff's Premier League defeat to Chelsea on Sunday.

The former Blues striker had already riled City fans earlier this season, predicting that the Bluebirds would be relegated 15 minutes before the campaign even got under way in August - with a record low points total.

He hammered home the point following Cardiff's late, late defeat to Chelsea on Sunday.

"It was a horrible decision and I can understand Neil Warnock's frustration to an extent," he said of the controversial result in the Welsh capital.

"But Cardiff are in the bottom three because frankly they haven't been good enough this season.

Superb Cardiff City must channel injustice at Man City, Chelsea exposed for what they are and duo continue revival

"(Ruben) Loftus-Cheek still went on to score the winner. Cardiff should have seen the game out, got something out of the game, they deserve what they got in the end."

But his latest comments will enrage supporters from across Wales.

He said: "Do you know what, this has really bugged me. Robbie Savage and Jason Mohammad, thank God they are not running football. Jason's attack on Huddersfield and Robbie's attack on Bournemouth, saying he doesn't want them in the top league.

The forensic Match of the Day takedown of the 'completely ridiculous' decisions that could cost Cardiff City survival

"That's not what sport is about. They are talking elitism. Listen! He supports a bang-average Cardiff City team, Robbie never played for a big club.

"I mean there is an argument that Welsh clubs shouldn't even be in the English league.  Irish clubs aren't. Scottish clubs aren't. So why are Welsh clubs? Why should we have them in the English leagues?

"Jason and Robbie were really disrepectful."

Ian, a Cardiff City fan who called into the show, branded Sutton a "twit" in reference to his comments about Cardiff.

Welsh clubs play in the English pyramid because there was no Welsh League when they were formed.
