Chris Sutton makes Neil Lennon quit plea as Celtic hero urges him to save legacy

Chris Sutton has told Neil Lennon he would quit as manager if he was in his shoes, and urged him to save his legacy.

The Celtic legend is a close friend of Lennon and has told he doesn't want him to be remembered by Hoops fans for this season after such a long and successful career at the club.

Lennon has been under fire for much of the season with poor performances and poor results leading to Celtic being 20 points behind rivals Rangers at the top of the Premiership.

It's a huge blow as they chased 10 In A Row and Lennon all but admitted that the league was gone in a fiery press conference earlier this week.

Sutton admits he understands why Lennon is sticking there and wants to turn things around, but he feels that the time has gone because there's no support left for him in the fanbase.

He told BT Sport's Scottish Football Extra show: "If I was in his situation I would walk away.

"Neil is my friend and Neil's legacy as a player and manager, he's done great things for the club, and he was a big fan's favourite and he had a connection with the fans because he never gave up on the pitch.

"I can understand his thought process at the moment because I still think there will be something in the bottom of his stomach where he feels he can turn the situation around.

"But the fact is, he doesn't have any support. Because of what he has achieved as a manager and as a player, I don't want Neil Lennon to be remembered for obstinate and awkward at this moment in time.

"Some fans will see this period that Neil is damaging the club so that's what I wouldn't like in years to come."

The explosive media conference earlier this week was criticised from all angles and Sutton reckons that he had some fair points, but believes it was a 'last stand'.

He added: "It did a little bit of the back of Peter Lawwell apologising.

"Some people across the country don't want to take it as an apology and say that Peter Lawwell didn't mean it so for Neil to come out - and he did come out swinging - I was taken aback a little bit and I don't necessarily think Neil has undermined Peter Lawwell, it's his opinion, it's strange and sums up Celtic's season that they aren't singing off the same hymn sheet.

"I thought some of the points he made actually were fair but to actually try to justify the whole Dubai trip was absolutely ridiculous from him and unnecessary.

"Then, of course, it brought a lot of pressure onto himself and the team going into Wednesday night."
