Chris Sutton has claimed Rangers ’ unbeaten league campaign would mean they are Invincbles "with an asterisk".
The Celtic hero was locked in a heated debate with Robbie Savage on BBC's 606 after St Johnstone sent Steven Gerrard's side out of the Scottish Cup.
It means that while they have an unblemished record in the Premiership they have failed to make an impact in either cup competition.
Following a call from a Perth Saints fan after the Ibrox shock, Robbie Savage posed the question to Sutton if the unbeaten league season or a Callum Davidson cup Double was the bigger achievement.
Sutton refused to answer until the trophies were decided in May, but the Welshman refused to drop the topic after a break.
The pundit insisted Brendan Rodgers Treble winners of the 2016/17 season were the only true "Invincibles".
He said: "You cannot call Steven Gerrard's team the 'Invincibles'. Invincibles asterisk."
The exchange in full
Savage: "Lot's of reaction to you not answering that question Chris. I'll answer it. If Steven Gerrard goes unbeaten...
Sutton: "Woah. Hang on a minutes. Are you calling them the Invincibles? Is that a hypothetical question?
Savage: "What?"
Sutton: "Are you calling them the Invincibles? Is that a hypothetical question?
Savage: You are very good at deflecting...
Sutton: "Hang on, are you calling Rangers the Invincibles if they go unbeaten in the league?
Savage: "Yes, in the league."
Sutton: "How are you calling them the Invincibles? Brendan Rodgers' team, just pipe down a minutes, were unbeaten in the league and won the cups. They are the true Invincibles. You cannot call Steven Gerrard's team the 'Invincibles'.
Savage : "So what are Arsenal then?"
Sutton: "Invincibles asterisk."
Savage: "So answer the question then, Rangers winning the league is a better achievement that St Johnstone winning two cups?"
Sutton: "It's best to wait and make a decision on that. I deal in facts. It's a ridiculous question."
