Chris Sutton in cheeky Rangers retort as Celtic hero doesn't take Europa League exit lying down

Celtic hero Chris Sutton has refused to take his old team's exit from the Europa League lying down - pointing to their upcoming Premier Sports Cup final as consolation.

Sutton was on punditry duty on Thursday night as Bayer Leverkusen ended Celtic 's campaign early with a late comeback in Germany.

Later in the evening Rangers sealed their passage through to the last 32 with a convincing victory over Sparta Prague in Gio van Bronckhorst's first game.

Record Sport columnist Sutton was reacting on Twitter to the news Scotland had drawn Ukraine in the World Cup playoff. In response, a Rangers fan noted that he had been 'quiet' the day after Celtic's defeat in Germany.

But Sutton wrote in reply: "I've been at a League Cup Final meeting..."

Celtic will face Hibs at Hampden in December after Jack Ross' team eliminated Rangers with a stunning 3-1 win on Sunday.

It will give Ange Postecoglou's team a chance at some early silverware that would restore momentum and lift their spirits after they were forced to settle for the Euro consolation prize of Conference League football.
