Chris Sutton goads Ally McCoist over Rangers 'complacency' as Ibrox legend delivers stinging Alfredo Morelos verdict

Chris Sutton has branded Rangers "complacent" after a disappointing defeat in Malmo as he clashed with Ibrox legend Ally McCoist.

It was a poor showing by Steven Gerrard's side in Sweden but a late strike from Steven Davis handed them a lifeline in the second leg.

Celtic favourite Sutton couldn't resist a cheeky dig about the 2-1 slip-up as he wound-up McCoist over a perceived drop in standards.

On BT Sport's Scottish Football Extra, McCoist was asked by host Darrell Currie for his thoughts on the performance, stating: “I was not happy, I was not happy with -

Sutton cut in, adding: “They were complacent weren’t they Ally?

McCoist bit to the jibe, commenting: “No they weren’t. They weren’t complacent, they just weren’t very good.

Sutton continued: “It was complacency. We all saw it. It was the old Rangers, wasn’t it?”

McCoist went on: “No it wasn’t, it was a poor performance.

“It was a poor performance. I would struggle to give many pass marks, because I thought we were poor all over the park.

“Rangers did not play at all. Kent had one of those evenings. I did say I had concerns about the centre-forward position. Obviously no Morelos and Roofe was suspended for it.

“I thought that would be key and pivotal.”

Record Sport columnist Sutton used the absence of Alfredo Morelos as to back up his argument, and McCoist didn't hold back on the late arrival of the Colombian ahead of the crucial qualifier.

Sutton said: “Should Steven Gerrard have made sure Morelos was back? He knew Roofe couldn’t play.

"When I talk about complacency, has Steven Gerrard taken Morelos too lightly by not brining Morelos back?”

McCoist: “Morelos, regardless of where he is playing, Rangers started the season to qualify for the Champions League and that’s the most important thing of the lot. He’s got to be back and doing the same as Kamara. Kamara was at the Euros.

“We know Morelos, our Alfredo, and we love him, has a bit of previous in this department.

“I would imagine the Rangers staff would have wanted him back.

‘I was concerned about the lack of goals in the centre forward position.”
