Chris Sutton fires Celtic board warning as he outlines what Ange Postecoglou must demand after AZ good fortune

Celtic legend Chris Sutton insists the Parkhead board must see Ange Postecoglou requires more reinforcements in the transfer market after scraping through against AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League.

Kyogo Furuhashi's opening goal had the away side off to a flyer against the Eredivisie side but it was quickly levelled on the night when Joe Hart's fluffed clearance let Zakaria Aboukhlal through to finish into an empty net.

A Carl Starfelt own goal then saw Alkmaar get even closer but they couldn't clinch a third goal to take the tie to extra time despite sustained second-half pressure that saw them waste a number of big opportunities.

Postecoglou's side are now through to the group stage by the skin of their teeth.

But Sutton reckons it's a let-off for Celtic — and he's adamant Dom McKay and the rest of the hierarchy in Glasgow's east end must see their manager needs more signings to build on a strong start, especially if one or both of Odsonne Edouard and Ryan Christie depart.

Speaking to Premier Sports, he said: "Ange Postecoglou said last week that the players were running on empty, which is a slight worry when you're only a few games into the season.

"Talk of Edouard going, Christie going — they need to replace them!

"You look at the performance tonight, you see (Greg) Taylor going off (injured).

"Maybe there's another message to the board here. 'Come on, I've done all right, I've got you through to the Europa League group stage, you've got to give me some help as well.'

"And in fairness his record in the transfer market so far... Kyogo improved the team, Abada improved the team. Joe Hart, a horrific error tonight but Celtic are better with him in the team.

"His record so far has been pretty good.

"If the board can't see after tonight that this squad needs added to and the manager needs help, then what the hell is going on?"
