Chris Sutton claims he'd accept Rangers title role reversal during heated Celtic debate with Ally McCoist

Ally McCoist and Chris Sutton have gone to war over what should happen to this season’s Premiership title.

Ibrox icon McCoist insists Celtic CANNOT be made champions ‘under any circumstances’ after the SPFL was shut down over coronavirus.

But Hoops hero Sutton say the only fairest way is to give Celtic the crown and let them seal 9 in a row – and he insists Hearts should go down.

McCoist and Sutton are going at it on The Ladbrokes Debate which is airing today as a panel of experts discuss the impact of the deadly disease on Scottish football.

We’re waiting to hear what the Scottish football authorities will do in reaction to UEFA ’s decision to postpone Euro 2020 until next year.

Celtic are 13 points clear with eight games to go, including two derbies and Rangers have a game in hand.

If the season can’t be resumed partisan positions have been taken.

Sutton says: “We all hope that the season can be resumed but if it can’t then the fairest way is to make Celtic champions and Hearts are relegated.

“I can’t think of fairer outcome. Celtic have been the best team in the league. I’m not saying Hearts deserve to go down but they have been the worst team.

“If I was a Celtic player and Rangers were 13 points ahead and given the title I would accept that although I would be disappointed.

“But I understand there will be those who won’t accept that.”

McCoist shoots back: “You cannot possibly give a team a title when they haven’t won the title – and I include Liverpool in England in this.

“You can’t reward a team for something that hasn’t happened – ‘there you are, you’re the champions’ when you’re actually not the champions.

“More importantly you cannot punish a team when the season isn’t over – i.e. Hearts.

“The football authorities must exhaust every potential avenue to finish the season.

“And if they can’t then the season must be null and void but that is the worst scenario.”

Fellow panellist Alex Rae says: “I think we should award all of the European places on current standings.

“But I agree totally that you can’t hand the title to a team or relegate another team when the season hasn’t finished.

“There have been collapses before.”
