Chris Sutton calls George Edmundson 'daft' for giving away penalty in Leverkusen first half

In December, Steven Gerrard called for the introduction of VAR in Scottish football.

Tonight, however, he’ll be feeling less kindly towards the video technology.

A handball in the box by George Edmundson initially went unpunished, but after reviewing the video evidence a penalty was given.

The spot-kick was coolly converted by Kai Havertz after 37 minutes, handing Leverkusen a 1-0 lead and a vital away goal.

Reviewing the incident at half-time, former Celtic star Chris Sutton told BT Sport viewers: “It’s a really daft decision by Edmundson. Everybody’s aware that this is a VAR game.

“And do you know what? For all the dominance of Leverkusen, McGregor wasn’t really worked in the first half.

Rangers weren’t good enough as an attacking force and you would think there would be a bit of a response in the second half.”

Rangers legend Ally McCoist added: “One of the crazy things about this particular tournament - if that happened in the group stages it’s not a penalty, which makes a mockery of the game that we’re playing.”

McCoist added: “I’m not saying it’s the wrong decision. Absolutely. If it’s up the other end we’re screaming for a penalty. And his hand is in an unnatural decision.”
