Chris Sutton answers looming Celtic transfer question for Mohamed Elyounoussi and Diego Laxalt

Chris Sutton reckons Mohamed Elyounoussi and Diego Laxalt haven't done enough this season to warrant a permanent transfer to Celtic.

The pair were in impressive form against Rangers on Sunday as Elyounoussi gave the Parkhead side the lead with a brilliant diving header.

Laxalt also put in an assured display at left-back which begs the question, will Celtic try to sign them up for the long term in the summer?

But Sutton reckons they have both came up short this season despite showing their quality during the 1-1 derby.

He said in his Daily Record column: "Elyounoussi looked good during the contest. He was a real threat throughout the match and took his goal superbly.

"Some of his link-up play with Edouard was top class and he’s done plenty of impressive things this term.

"At the same time, when it has been the crunch he’s been found wanting and that’s my concern about looking too closely at a dead rubber.

"Yes, the evidence of this game showed me the 26-year-old would be worth keeping if Southampton are willing to do business. But then you consider the campaign as a whole and he, like others, haven’t done enough to warrant a big fee.

"Diego Laxalt falls into the same category. He looked much more like an AC Milan player in this game. He made positive runs, he was strong, he was solid in a defensive sense.

"It’s just what Celtic must have expected when he was signed on loan way back in October, just in time to make his debut in the first derby of the season against Rangers.

"But again, you ask yourself when you look at the entire season if he has done enough for Celtic to pursue a long-term agreement with Milan for big money and you have to have doubts.

"It’s all right performing here when nothing is really at stake but the displays have not been dependable when the heat has been on."

Odsonne Edouard is booked for simulation by referee Willie Collum as he goes down under a challenge from Borna Barisic during the Scottish Premiership match between Celtic and Rangers (2020 SNS Group)

Alfredo Morelos cancelled out Elyounoussi's opener as it finished all square at Celtic Park.

A contentious moment was when Odsonne Edouard was booked for simulation in the first half after a challenge from Borna Barisic.

This has sparked a debate whether it was a penalty or not, but Sutton believes Willie Collum got it spot on.

He added: "Celtic would have won had Odsonne Edouard not been a half yard off his game again because he had opportunities to clinch three points, having created an opening goal for Mohamed Elyounoussi.

"Incidentally, leave me out of the debate over the Edouard penalty kick and booking for simulation.

"It was not a penalty and it was simulation. The referee got it right.
