Chris Smalling has signed a new contract with Manchester United, the club have confirmed.

Smalling’s new deal keeps him at Old Trafford until June 2022 with the option to extend that by a further year.

The centre-half has been one of Jose Mourinho’ds preferred options at the back during his time in Manchester and has started 13 of United’s 16 Premier League matches this season.

“This is my ninth season with the club and I am delighted to be continuing my progression with this team,” Smalling said.

“It is a real honour to play for Manchester United and we are all now concentrating on the busy schedule of games throughout the festive period.”

Mourinho is keen to add to his defensive options with the club with Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly the manager’s preferred target.

The United boss has already had two bids for the defender rejected as he looks to bring in a world-class centre-back in the New Year.

United are now weighing up a third approach, with Napoli believed to be holding out for around £100million for the in-demand 27-year-old.
