Chris Smalling fumes after penalty wrongly given against him in Europa League

Chris Smalling fumed in 'disbelief' after conceding a last-gasp penalty - when the ball hit him in the face while playing for Roma in the Europa League.

Manchester United defender Smalling , who is on loan at Roma, jumped to defend a free-kick as the clock ticked into the 93rd minute with his team leading 1-0 against Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Replays show that the ball hit him full in the face - but he and his Roma team-mates were then stunned as Scottish referee Willie Collum awarded a penalty, judging the incident to be handball.

Lars Stindl fired home the spot-kick for Moenchengladbach, earning the visitors a 1-1 draw -with Smalling was left to reflect on his bad fortune.

Smalling tweeted: "Disbelief that this decision went against us... We deserved the three points, so disappointed..."

Moenchengladbach didn't wait too long to poke fun at the decision, tweeting a picture of character with a hand for a head along with the message: 'Too soon?'

But Scottish football fans were quick to sympathise with Smalling, with many criticising the standard of refereeing in the Scottish pyramid.

One said: "That’s the kind of sh**e we need to deal with in Scotland every week."

Another wrote: "Scottish refs. We get it every week."

And another posted: "Sorry Chris @ScottishFA think he’s our best ref."

VAR is not in use in this season's Europa League until the final, so there was no opportunity for the decision to be overturned.

Roma still topped Group J following the draw, but only by a point from Istanbul Basaksehir with three games left.
