Chris Shields could feature in Champions League away clash for Dundalk

Chris Shields could yet feature in Dundalk’s Champions League clash away to Riga on Wednesday.

The key midfielder shipped a bad facial injury in last week’s 0-0 draw in the first-leg at Oriel Park and was forced off.

But he took a full part in training yesterday and will travel to the Latvian capital on the team’s charter flight this morning.

Jordan Flores is ruled out because of his ongoing hip flexor injury and out-of-favour Stephen Folan won’t travel as he looks to secure a move away.

First-team coach John Gill is confident Dundalk can secure a result to take them through to the second round.

“We didn’t concede at home which was crucial,” he said. “But we could have been better in the final third, we had a lot of the ball.

“We created some chances, we got into some great positions. Riga played like we thought they would play.

“This team has been down this road before. We’re not going to panic and it was important that we kept a clean sheet.”

Gill continued: “One thing is for sure, Riga will have to come out and play. They sat in at Oriel which we expected but they’ll have to come out.

“I don’t think we’ll have as bad a night in the final third, and it’ll be a more open game. We’re confident heading to Riga.”
