Chris Ramsey impresses on The One Show in presenter spot as Matt Baker leaves

County Durham lad Matt Baker is quitting The One Show soon and celebrities are already filling his spot on the sofa next to Alex Jones.

But could another North East favourite be in the running as Matt's replacement? South Shields comedian Chris Ramsey won legions of fans with his good-humoured stint on Strictly Come Dancing last year.

And on Friday Chris took up the guest presenter slot, to the joy of his fans. Alex, who had interviewed Chris during Strictly, began by asking him whether he was still dancing.

"No, of course not. Who leaves Strictly and keeps dancing? Why would I do that? No!" laughed Chris. "You don't leave the biggest dancing show in the world and go to your local community centre on a Tuesday night. It's not the same."

He and Alex were joined by Alan Cummings to talk about his new play Endgame which is coming to The Old Vic Theatre in London. And they listened to the world's biggest musical instrument - The Earth Harp.

After the show, he went on Instagram to say: "Great fun guest hosting The BBC One Show. Thanks for having me guys!"

Matt Baker, who leaves in spring, commented, saying: " Champion job. Hope you tidied my dressing room!" while others lobbied for a more permanent feature.

CaroleElizabeth19 commented: "A great show. You are a natural replacement for when our lovely Matt Baker leaves."

Another fan said: "You smashed it. Hope we see you on The One Show again soon" and Jackie Veitch added: "You were great Chris. Very natural and of course funny."

Kimmy 0901 said: "Totally fab, you should do it regularly" and BevWueze added: "Great to see Alex back on TV, you'd make a great team."

Vivienne Hinds commented: "Great Chris, hope you get the job permanently."

However, Chris is travelling the country on his biggest ever stand-up tour - Chris Ramsey 20/20 - from March 21, including dates at Middlesbrough Town Hall on March 28, Durham's Gala Theatre April 7-8 and finally, Newcastle's Utilita Arena on December 5. Many venues are already sold out.

The BBC has not said when it will be announcing a replacement for Matt Baker.
