Chris Pratt has been forced to deny he follows the teachings of an anti-LGBTQ church after Ellen Page claimed it was “infamous” for being homophobic.
Page called for Pratt to address his church during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert after the show’s Twitter account tweeted he would be talking about his “spiritual side”.
Page, who is married to Canadian dancer Emma Portner, posted: “Oh. K. Um. But his church is infamously anti lgbtq so maybe address that too?”
She later tweeted: “If you are a famous actor and you belong to an organization that hates a certain group of people, don’t be surprised if someone simply wonders why it’s not addressed. Being anti LGBTQ is wrong, there aren’t two sides. The damage it causes is severe. Full stop. Sending love to all.”
Pratt has since defended his place of worship, which he is yet to disclose, telling fans that Page’s allegations could not be “further from the truth”.
In a statement on Instagram he posted: “I go to a church that opens their doors to absolutely everyone.”
Pratt also said the church was, “there for me every step of the way” during his divorce from actress Anna Faris, who he shares six-year-old son Jack with, and insisted that it offers “love and support” regardless of “sexual orientation, race or gender”.
“My church community was there for me every step of the way, never judging, just gracefully accompanying me on my walk,” he wrote of his divorce. “They helped me tremendously offering love and support.”
He said his faith is important to him but that “no church defines me or my life”.
He continued: “I am not a spokesperson for any group of people. My values define who I am. We need less hate in this world, not more. I am a man who believes that everyone is entitled to love who they want free from the judgement of their fellow man.”
He shared the statement alongside a picture of a sheep standing on a rock and ended with the quote: “Jesus said, ‘I give you a new command, love one another’.”
Pratt recently revealed he turned to the Bible to help him lose weight, telling fans he was on a diet inspired by the life of Daniel, a prophet from the Old Testament.
“OK, hi, Chris Pratt here. Day three of the Daniel Fast, check it out, it’s 21 days of prayer and fasting,” he confirmed in an Instagram post.
The Jurassic World star recently announced his engagement to Katherine Schwarzenegger, the daughter of Terminator star Arnold.
