Star Trek’s Chris Pine is in talks to play Wonder Woman’s sometime boyfriend, Steve Trevor, in the upcoming superhero epic starring Gal Gadot, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Pine, best known for his role as the new Captain James T Kirk in the long-running science fiction saga, would play a comic-book character who has changed radically since debuting in 1941. Trevor was initially a US army officer whose plane crash-landed on Paradise Island, home of Wonder Woman and her Amazonian tribe. She then travelled home to the USA with him, and he morphed into a Lois Lane-style paramour as the superhero adopted a secret identity, Diana Prince.

In an 80s reinvention, Trevor became a father figure to Wonder Woman, rather than her lover. In 2011, he became a member of an anti-supervillain force who was previously Diana’s boyfriend: in this version, he once again acts as the catalyst for Wonder Woman to leave Paradise Island after crashing his plane there.

Wonder Woman will be released in 2017 as part of Warner Bros’ ambitious slate of 10 superhero movies based on the studio’s rights to the DC Comics back catalogue. Patty Jenkins, who helmed Monster starring Charlize Theron, is directing. However, Gadot will first appear as the character in next year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Pine, 34, is due to return as Kirk in the upcoming Simon Pegg-penned Star Trek Beyond, directed by Fast & Furious regular Justin Lin. He’s also due to star in period disaster drama The Finest Hours, about a US coastguard team battling to save 30 beleaguered sailors stranded on a sinking oil tanker off the coast of Cape Cod in 1952.
