On the day that the NBA will resume competition from Orlando, Thunder point guard and NBPA President Chris Paul announced that he is partnering with two of his fellow future first-ballot Hall of Famers in Dwyane Wade and Carmelo Anthony to create Social Change Fund.
According to Paul’s tweet, the mission of the fund is to address socio-economic injustice issues facing Black and Brown communities by making meaningful change. The timing of the announcement probably isn’t a coincidence.
Anthony, a former member of the Thunder, recently served as guest editor for a special issue of SLAM Magazine which focused on social justice initiatives. The three also famously appeared at the ESPY Awards together with LeBron James in 2016 advocating for Black Lives Matter, among other causes.
One of the obstacles that stood in the way of the NBA getting back to competition was the belief among some of the league’s players that they’re taking the floor would detract from ongoing protests against police brutality and the mission of many pro-Black social justice initiatives.
Paul, Anthony and Wade are obviously doing their best to ensure that isn’t the case.
