Chris Packham would get himself arrested at protest — if his dog wasn't poorly

Chris Packham has said he would have no problem with being arrested during the climate protests – but he needs to get his poorly pooch better first.

The Springwatch presenter, 57, joined Extinction Rebellion’s action in London this week despite having to nurse 15-year-old Scratchy.

Chris was arrested in Malta in 2017 for campaigning against people illegally killing birds.

But while he is happy to be held again for his beliefs, he said: “My dog is very ill and needs constant care. He’s the most important thing in my universe. So getting arrested would have been dangerous.”

On how bosses at the BBC might react to his arrest, he said: “One would imagine they would think rationally. If you had murdered someone, they’d hopefully be upset.

“If you are getting the world to wake up and stop it committing suicide, one would hope they would see that as a different sort of crime.”

Campaigners want the Government to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025.

And Chris, whose case in Malta was dismissed, said he is impressed by their message of “no drinks, no violence”, adding: “It has achieved its objective, the conversation has turned to climate change.”
