Chris Packham vows not to let firebombs stop his wildlife campaigning

Chris Packham has stepped up his campaigning despite his firebombing hell has employed a security firm.

Thugs torched a Land Rover outside his home, which then set fire to his gate and fence, in October.

The naturalist – back on TV in Winterwatch tomorrow – believes it is linked to his cam-paigning but insists nothing will stop him.

He said: “I’m going to chuck it back at them twice as hard as I was beforehand, and that’s my attitude.”

The star, 60, brought in security at home to ensure he is safe. He said: “We will continue to listen to advice. The way that we live is quite different from most people, but it’s not going to have any affect on me.

“Do you know, since it happened, I’ve worked harder on certain causes that I am campaigning about than I was previously. I’ve redoubled my efforts, deliberately so, in response to that. I can’t let them win.”

Asked if he would ever consider moving away from the New Forest, in Hampshire, he says: “No, I never take a step backwards. Ever! Do you know what, they said: ‘Do you want metal gates?’ and I said, No, I don’t.

“I don’t want to live in a fortress. They said, But what if they burn them down again? And I said, I’ll just get more wood ones. I’m not going to have these people changing my life. I just want to live normally.”

Chris says his dad Colin, who died last year, would have approved. He said: “That was one of his key things, he’d say ‘never let the b******* grind you down.’”

Chris told last year how a man in a balaclava parked the car by the gate of his home, torched it, then fled in a getaway car.

He said: “I’d gone to bed. It exploded with a massive bang which woke me and the dogs.”

Hampshire Police is probing the attack, the latest in a string of intimidating incidents. In 2019 Chris got death threats, and his partner Charlotte Corney, 44, has been trolled.

  • Winterwatch starts tomorrow at 8pm on BBC2.
