Chris Packham: 'I can't get my head around why anyone would want to shoot an endangered animal'

There's no doubt at all that in the majority of instances, trophy hunting is large sums of money going into small numbers of pockets.

Someone is going to pay money to extinguish the life of an animal which most other people are trying to keep alive, in an age where the number of animals on the planet is rapidly diminishing.

We’ve lost 40 per cent of our wildlife since 1970.

So if we’re losing 40 per cent of our wildlife and we know species like rhino, elephant, giraffe, have gone into precipitous decline, can we morally justify it?

Definitely no, we can’t. How can you ask kids to raise money for animal conservation if they then learn that if you’ve got enough money, you can go and kill an endangered animal?

It’s about killing things for pleasure.

And what I’ve never been able to get my head around is why any human, principally human males, would want to go and shoot an endangered animal in the 21st century.
