Hibs are in talks with Major League Soccer to seal a deal for Chris Mueller in this window.
The US international has agreed a pre-contract with the Easter Road club and is due to move there in January.
The 24-year-old, however, has been left out of Orlando City’s last squad since news emerged he would be moving to the Scottish Premiership.
Jack Ross is now hoping his club can cut a deal that will see Mueller before the close of the window.
He is unlikely to feature for Orlando but all registrations are centralised and a deal must be struck with the MLS before they agree to release their contract players.
Hibs are prepared to pay a nominal fee but won’t be held to ransom for a player who they will sign for nothing at the start of next year.
Speaking following the pre-contract agreement, Ross said: "Chris was someone who was brought to our attention a number of months ago.
"We worked long and hard to make this deal happen.
"Chris is an exciting signing and his recent performances with Orlando have been terrific.
"He has a skillset that we think is going to be really well suited to Scotland."
