Chris Mort's comments catch the eye as observers make Newcastle United takeover link

Former Newcastle United chairman Chris Mort thinks Financial Fair Play will be "challenged in court" by an ambitious club.

Mort's comment - at the Financial Times' business of football summit - is intriguging as it comes with the lawyer having worked on the Newcastle United takeover attempted by PCP Capital Partners and the Saudi Arabian PIF.

Mort was one of the lawyers working with the buyers on the deal that was at an advanced stage last year but he is well known to Mike Ashley, having served as his chairman when he first took over at St James' Park.

Mort told the Financial Times' business of football summit "it’s hard to see FFP surviving in its current form" and claimed that an ambitious club would soon challenge the rules in court.

That prompted an interesting exchanged with Athletic reporter Matt Slater, acutely aware of Mort's links to the buyers, asking pointedly: "I wonder if he has one in mind?"

Andy Holt, the Accrington chairman, then asked Nick De Marco: "Attention, if you (sic) doing nowt" in an invitation to take up the cause.

De Marco's response - after liking the initial tweet about challenging FFP - was short and to the point: "Never doing nowt but thanks for the tip off."
