Chris Maguire's brilliant gesture at Peterborough after ball hits fan behind the goal

Chris Maguire has been praised for his actions at Peterborough after he accidentally struck a young fan with a wayward shot during Sunderland's warm-ups.

As is customary before a game, Maguire and his Black Cats team-mates had some shooting practice to end their warm-up ahead of the League One clash at London Road - which ended in a disappointing 1-1 draw.

And despite the result denting Sunderland's promotion hopes, one young fan will have left happy after Maguire's act of generosity.

During the shooting practice, Maguire noticed his shot had missed the target and fired behind the goal striking a young Sunderland fan.

He wasted no time in hopping the advertising boards and making his way into the crowd to see the young fan he'd just accidentally hit.

But Maguire's kindness didn't stop there.

The midfielder, just returning to action after suffering a fractured leg earlier this year, returned to see the same supporter at half-time, this time bearing a gift. Maguire presented the fan with a signed Sunderland shirt by way of apology.

The gesture was posted on Twitter by Sunderland Til I Die and has so far received over a thousand likes and a hundred retweets.

Fans have also been praising the midfielder, with the original post describing the Scot as ' a credit to the club'.

With three games to go and Sunderland battling desperately for automatic promotion, Maguire will be hoping he can have as big an impact on the pitch now he's back fit.
