Chris Maguire reveals the message Phil Parkinson has drummed into his Sunderland players

Sunderland forward Chris Maguire has revealed the key message Phil Parkinson has delivered to his Black Cats squad when it comes to playing at the Stadium of Light.

Parkinson's side will look to get their League One promotion push back on track on Saturday as they welcome struggling Southend United to Wearside.

In his first four games as manager, Parkinson has just had one taste of the Stadium of Light experience, albeit a very positive one.

Sunderland thrashed Tranmere 5-0 on Parkinson's Stadium of Light debut and Maguire revealed that the former Bolton boss has 'drummed into them' that they cannot allow away teams to 'dictate' games on Wearside.

“We don’t want to get beat at our home," the Scotland international told safc.com.

“It’s our home for a reason and we want to win every game.

“It might not be possible at times, but we don’t want teams to come to the Stadium of Light and dictate to us.

“That’s important and the manager has drummed it into us."

He continued: “If we can get clean sheets, then that gives us a good chance of winning a game.

“We have had one this season and maybe that isn’t good enough all round from everybody, but we know now what we have got to do.

“We need to score more and keep more clean sheets at the other end.”
