Chris Lyons happy to keep setting up goals for Luke McNally as Drogheda United target promotion

Chris Lyons has no problem setting up goal-scoring defender Luke McNally as long as Drogheda United keep winning.

The centre half claimed a hat-trick on Friday in the First Division play-off final in the Boynesiders’ 5-1 success over Cabinteely.

The 6-2 aggregate success means the Louth side will face Finn Harps in the first leg of the promotion/relegation Play-off final tonight – in what is a repeat of the 2018 decider.

“I’ll keep setting them up, fair play to him – he’s an absolute machine, I’m delighted for him,” said Drogheda’s leading scorer on McNally who has now netted nine times this season.

“He’s breathing down my neck in terms of goals. That’s what dreams are made of. Fair play to him.”

A postman by trade, Lyons has delivered by picking up Drogheda’s player of the year accolade last week and signing a new contract with the club for next season.

He said: “I’ve had a great few weeks personally. I kind of pushed it to the side. I was just concentrating in the second Cabinteely game to be honest.

“Now, it’s just about concentrating on Finn Harps. Hopefully, I can enjoy it more at the end of the season.

“Our aim is to do our best in the next two games.”

But the 26-year-old stressed he can only really enjoy it if it is followed by promotion.

“That’s the aim. That’s what we’re going for. We’ll give it a good shot.”
