Chris Kamara remembers shocking racist ordeal in Wetherby after being told 'we don’t serve your kind in here'

Much-loved football pundit Chris Kamara swung by Wetherby on Thursday night to help to turn on the Christmas lights in a packed-out town centre.

But while there was lots to celebrate on the night, Kammy was also reminded of a shocking incident of racism he experienced in the town during his playing days.

The 63-year-old, who previously played for Sheffield United, Bradford and Leeds, was asked to reflect during the event of his memories in Wetherby and said he'd got "some great memories and one not so great memory from 1976".

Despite being urged to tell the huge crowd what the memory was, Kammy opted not to but took to Twitter this morning (Thursday) to inform his 1.7 million followers.

He said that it was May 1976 when he swung by the town for fish and chips while playing for Portsmouth on a trip back from Sunderland.

He said: "All players piled in pub opposite & I was told we don’t serve your kind in here."

He added: "Last night over 3,000 people turned up to see me put on the Crimbo lights. The world is a better place."

There has been an outpouring of support for the broadcaster since and the post has now had over 26,000 likes.

One follower posted: "The worlds a better place because of people like you that choose to forgive and educate! So proud that Leeds United started the “kick racism out of football” movement! You sir, will always be a legend."

Another fan wrote: "Still a lot of work to do mate but I can’t think of a more popular commentator in their country. A national treasure."
