Chris Jones to show up for start of Chiefs training camp

Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones is set to rejoin the team at the onset of training camp when veterans report.

According to Yahoo Sports’ Terez Paylor and several others, Jones is on his way to training camp. There was some concern that he might not show up, but he is indeed planning to arrive ahead of the teams 2 p.m. meeting today.

Jones had stayed away during OTA’s and minicamp as he seeks a new contract from the Chiefs. Now that he’s returned to the team and will participate in training camp, talks over a new contract are set to intensify.

If Jones had decided to stay away any longer the team could have fined him for each day he missed. He needed to report back to the team by August 6 anyways to accrue a full season in 2019 and become a free agent in 2020. So it never was truly a hold out in the traditional sense of the word.

Jones’ agents, the Katz Brothers, provided a statement on Jones’ return to the Chiefs:

“He knows his value and if he has to play out his deal in order to reach free agency, then that’s what he will do. For now, he’s focused on winning a Super Bowl for Kansas City.”

It’s onward for the Chiefs and Jones whether they reach a deal on a new contract or not. For now, he’s rejoined the team and will set his sights on winning a Super Bowl this upcoming season with the Chiefs.
