Chris Jones to receive franchise tag, keeping potential top Raiders free agent target off market

A lot of teams were licking their chops at the idea of Chiefs defensive lineman Chris Jones hitting the free-agent market. It would appear at this moment they will need to take their appetites elsewhere as the interior pass rusher is going to be tagged by the Chiefs according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Jones would have been made the highest-paid defensive tackle in the NFL, expecting to pull in a deal that approached $18 million per year. The Raiders could very well have been one of the teams vying to sign him.

Recently Mike Mayock listed finding a defensive tackle among the team’s top priorities. He also called out 2018 second-round pick PJ Hall at the combine this week, saying new defensive line coach Rod Marinelli won’t put up with a lack of hustle.

With Jones out of the picture, the cupboard isn’t bare. Arik Armstead and Javon Hargrave are two other big names who could be an upgrade in the middle. Other names include Marcell Dareus, Derek Wolfe, Gerald McCoy, and Leonard Williams.
