Chris Hughton told to 'address' Nottingham Forest issue in January transfer window

Nottingham Forest fans are calling on Chris Hughton to strengthen his squad in the January transfer window after the Boxing Day draw against Birmingham City.

Forest had the better of the opportunities in the first-half but couldn't find the breakthrough in a goalless draw at the City Ground.

Sammy Ameobi and Ryan Yates both tried their luck from range in the early stages, before the latter then sent an overhead kick over the bar from a free-kick with 20 minutes gone.

And it was Yates who had the best opportunity of the first 45 minutes, as the half hour mark neared. Yuri Ribeiro’s cross was knocked down into his path by Lewis Grabban, and the midfielder’s well-struck volley from inside the area was expertly palmed away by Neil Etheridge.

The Blues goalkeeper was called into action twice more before the break, both times by Ameobi, with two curling efforts which were comfortably stopped.

Tobias Figueiredo went closest for Forest in the second-half while Brice Samba denied Ivan Sanchez at the other end.

“I think the missed opportunity is that we were playing at home, and we were off the back of two good results,” Hughton admitted afterwards. “We went into the game in a confident way.

“When you’re on the back of some defeats, like they were, you could tell they were determined. They pressed well and were determined not to concede.

“These are difficult games. You need that moment for a breakthrough, and we probably didn’t do enough to get it.”

The result made it three games unbeaten for Forest but Hughton's side remain just two points above the relegation zone and fans want to see the club take full advantage of the window, which opens next week.

Here's how supporters reacted...

Forest4Ever: Biggest January window in the club history this ... screw it up and hello league one.

Jack Kavanagh: Drab. Boring, un-inventive, lack of creativity. Formation change poor, subs impact poor. January is so important to sort the squad balance out with 2 or 3 tweaks.

Stuart Hosking: Seriously have to address our lack of goals in the January window, we should be beating teams as poor as Birmingham.

George Thurlby: Devoid of any creativity and so slow. Ponderous football! We need a miracle in January to pick up a couple of players to get us over the safety line this season, how depressing.

Paul: Not the greatest game again. Figs did better for a change (still prefer Soh). We need something good in January as this team isn’t too good to get really sucked into a real relegation battle.

Mark: If Hughton makes changes to the squad on the 1st Jan then I’ll believe that he has a plan, if the ‘club’ waits until the end of January then we’ll be in the bottom 3 come the end of the season.
