Chris Hughes defends Harry Maguire over alleged 'Do you know who I am?' police row

Love Island star Chris Hughes has publicly defended England and Manchester United footballer Harry Maguire following his sentencing.

The 27-year-old sportsman was found guilty of aggravated assault, resisting arrest and repeated attempts of bribery after arrest on Mykonos for which he was handed a suspended sentence of 21 months and 10 days in prison.

Following the verdict, reality star Chris took to Twitter to slam what he described as 'fake news' surrounding Maguire's arrest.

Chris, 27, who had been seen drinking at the same Mykonos bar as Maguire last week, took to Twitter to post footage of Sky News presenter Rebecca Williams reporting on the England defender's court hearing.

In the clip, Williams said: "The latest we are hearing from the prosecution... they claim that Maguire said 'Do you know who I am? I am the captain of Manchester United. I'm very rich. I can give you money. I can pay you. Please let us go,'"

Alongside the clip, Chris wrote: "This never happened. Just simply, this never happened. So much fake news circulating."

The Love Island star had been pictured drinking at a pool party at SantAnna Bar with Maguire and snooker player Judd Trump in the days leading up to the arrest.

It was claimed that the group racked up a huge £63,000 bar tab in just five hours at the local bar.

They are said to have splurged on a £18,000 bottle of Dom Perignon, a £17,000 bottle of Armand de Brignac champagne and £750 on several bottles of Jack Daniel’s.

It's also claimed they treated themselves to £1,2000 worth of lobster plus seven ribeye steaks, costing £820.

In the early hours of Friday 21 August, Maguire was arrested after he became embroiled in a physical and verbal altercation with Mykonos police.

Following Tuesday's guilty verdict, Maguire issued a statement saying "if anything myself, family and friends are the victims."

He also said he had instructed his legal team to take steps to appeal his sentencing.

His lawyer has said they hope crucial video evidence will prove the footballer's innocence over the assault and bribery charges.

Maguire's team also say they have forensic proof to back up their claims that Maguire’s sister Daisy, 20, was injected with a substance by two mystery ‘Albanian’ men, which sparked the street brawl which led to his arrest.

Maguire was temporarily dropped from the England line-up following the announcement (PA)

Maguire’s lawyer had failed to get the case postponed at the court in Syros on Tuesday, to give him time to prepare a proper defence.

But he is expected to quickly start the appeal process in the hope of restoring the player’s battered reputation.

England manger Gareth Southgate dropped Maguire from his squad following his conviction in Greece just hours after selecting him for net month's Nations Leagle double-header against Iceland and Denmark.
