Chris Harris did not report to Broncos’ offseason workouts

The Denver Broncos started their offseason program Tuesday and veteran cornerback Chris Harris was not in attendance, according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Harris, 29, is presumably sending a message that he is not happy about his contract situation. After earning $7.9 million in 2019, Harris is scheduled to become a free agent in 2020. Denver appears to be in no rush to give him an extension.

Broncos general manager John Elway has said the team will look at giving players extensions after the NFL draft, which wraps up April 27. Harris probably isn’t feeling very loved after the team signed cornerbacks Kareem Jackson ($11 million/year) and Bryce Callahan ($7 million/year) during free agency.

Since joining the team as an undrafted free agent out of Kansas following the 2011 NFL draft, Harris has been voted to the Pro Bowl four times. He was a key member of the team’s Super Bowl-winning defense in 2015 and he remains one of the best slot cornerbacks in the league.

It’s worth noting that April’s offseason workouts are voluntary. The team will not begin mandatory sessions until June.
