NEW DELHI: Legendary West Indian cricketer Chris Gayle on Wednesday extended his best wishes to Indian skipper Rohit Sharma for breaking his record of most sixes in international cricket.
Rohit hit the ball to all parts of the ground as he completed 1,000 World Cup runs and then went past Gayle's record of 553 sixes across all formats.
Rohit hit his record 554th six off the bowling of Naveen-ul-Haq during India's run chase against Afghanistan in the World Cup match. The 'Hitman' began the match with 551 sixes to his name and swiftly surpassed Gayle's record.
Gayle took to social media platform 'X', formerly Twitter to congratulate the Indian skipper for attaining this feat.
"Congrats, @ImRo45 - Most Sixes in International cricket. #45 Special."
After Rohit and Gayle, Pakistan's Shahid Afridi is at the third position with 476 sixes, followed by New Zealand's Brendon McCullum with 398, and his compatriot Martin Guptill with 383.
Rohit didn't stop there as he surpassed compatriot Sachin Tendulkar with a record seventh World Cup century to lead India to a crushing eight-wicket win over Afghanistan.
Rohit's century was also the fastest by an Indian in a World Cup, quicker than Kapil Dev's hundred in 72 balls against Zimbabwe in 1983.
