Chris Froome's year from hell continues as he severs thumb tendon in kitchen mishap

Chris Froome's year from hell continued on Saturday morning after he severed his thumb tendon in a kitchen mishap.

The British road cyclist cut his thumb with a kitchen knife in a freak incident at home.

Earlier this year the four-time Tour de France champion was involved in a high-speed crash that ruled him out of contention of this year's race for the yellow jersey.

The 34-year-old sustained a fractured right femur, a fractured elbow and fractured ribs after he hit a wall at 54km/h prior to stage four of the Criterium du Dauphine in June.

Froome is unlikely to race again this year after a setback in his recovery (PA)

Froome took to social media to admit that 2019 wasn't his year and that he cannot wait for 2020.

The post said: "Stupidly cut my thumb with a kitchen knife and had to have surgery to put the tendon back together last night."

And the Team Ineos rider even joked saying: "Stuck giving a thumbs up for a couple of weeks.

Concluding the post by saying: "This is not my year. Can't wait for 2020."

Froome had been able to get back on his bike for some light training sessions towards the end of August, but his latest setback means he now needs to keep his thumb in a sling for at least a couple of weeks.

However, 2019 hasn't been all bad after he was awarded the 2011 Vuelta a Espana after the initial winner, Juan Jose Cobo, was found guilty of doping irregularities.

Froome is one of the most successful British riders and has won the Giro d'Italia once, the Vuelta a Espana twice and picked up two gold medals at the Olympic Games alongside his four Tour wins.
