Chris Evans sex allegations: police to take no further action

The Metropolitan police have confirmed that they will not pursue an investigation into allegations of sexual assault against the Radio 2 DJ and former Top Gear presenter Chris Evans dating back to the 1990s.

Evans was interviewed under caution at an east London police station on Thursday. Police later issued a statement saying there was insufficient evidence to pursue an investigation.

A Met spokesman said: “An allegation of non-recent sexual assault was made to police on Monday 23 May 2016. The allegation was made by a woman against a man. It related to incidents in Tower Hamlets in the 1990s.

“The matter was investigated by officers from the sexual offences, exploitation and child abuse command. The decision was made by the police that there was insufficient evidence to proceed.”

A spokesman for Evans said: “The Metropolitan police have confirmed that the complaint has been investigated, but it fails to meet the evidential test to warrant any further action. Case is dropped.”

Earlier this month, it was reported that Evans was to be questioned. He has denied the claims and previously described the reports as a “witch hunt”. Evans had faced a barrage of negative press since it was announced that he would be taking over as presenter of Top Gear following the departure of Jeremy Clarkson.

After a string of poor ratings for the first series, Evans quit the show, saying he “gave it my best shot”.
