Chris Evans' emotional response after pilot death at CarFest

(Press Association)

Having created the event on the basis of his "dream of the perfect family festival," the death of a pilot during an aerial display over the weekend at CarFest was an overwhelming tragedy for Chris Evans.

The new Top Gear host was visibly shocked and emotional as he spoke to reporter following an aircraft crash that caused the death of pilot Kevin Whyman, 35. The incident occurred around 2pm in Oulton Park, Cheshire, on Saturday.

Mr Evans addressed reporters later on Saturday to announce that the event would continue on Sunday despite Mr Whyman’s death.

“The event will continue on the advice of the three aviation authorities...and police,” Mr Evans said, “and that's what we're going to do.”

Cheshire Police are continuing their investigation at the scene alongside the Air Accident Investigation Branch.

Superintendent Bev Raistrick thanked spectators who submitted videos and pictures of the incident which will aid the investigation.

Video from the tragedy at CarFest shows the plane nose-diving after flying at a low level, with the small aircraft disappearing behind trees before a big cloud of black smoke appears.

Mr Evans added: "Our condolences go out to his family, who have been informed."

Mr Whyman was married with a young daughter.

A statement from Heritage Aircraft Trust, which runs the team Mr Whyman was part of, said: "Kevin was a Royal Air Force trained fast jet pilot whose enthusiasm for flying the Folland Gnat was infectious. He will be greatly missed by his family, the Team and many friends.

"Please respect the privacy of family members and of the team at this most difficult time."
