Chris Evans and family shoot Love Actually inspired Virgin Radio promo as he goes head-to-head with Zoe Ball

Chris Evans has roped in his family to make a rallying cry for listeners ahead of his new breakfast show on Virgin Radio.

The radio veteran jumped ship from BBC Radio 2, which now has Zoe Ball at the helm, and will kick off his new show on January 21.

Evans was joined by his wife Natasha Shishmanian and their sons Noah and Eli to shoot a Love Actually inspired promo to inform fans how to tune in next week.

The quartet can be seen in Virgin Radio t-shirts as they hold up several white cards reading: “Come over for breakfast. Rescan your DAB Radio to receive Virgin Radio. Listen on the app or on your mobile and on virginradio.co.uk.”

In another clip six-year-old Eli attempts to tune his radio before telling viewers: “If you want to hear dad on Virgin Radio you need to press the rescan button on your digital radio.”

Evans will be joined by members of his Radio 2 team including Vassos Alexander as sports reporter and Rachel Horne on travel. It will air without any ad breaks thanks to a partnership with Sky.

Evans stood down from Radio 2 on Christmas Eve after eight years in the driving seat. He paid an emotional tribute to his wife, hailing her his “guiding light” before thanking fans for their constant support and bowing out to Amazing Grace.

Zoe Ball says she had a 'great time' following her first Radio 2 breakfast show

Ball took over the role on Monday morning to huge praise from listeners who joked they had already forgotten who Evans is. Others were moved to tears by her opening song choice as she kicked off with Aretha Franklin’s Respect.

The two will go head-to-head in the battle for listeners next week for the first time since 1997 when Ball stepped in to host the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show as Evans made his debut on Virgin.

Talking about the rivalry she said: “It’ll be like history repeating. I can’t remember what the outcome was but he’s always been so brilliant and supportive, so, yeah, bring it on.”
