Chris Burke says Kilmarnock players have belief they can climb out of slump

Chris Burke says the Kilmarnock players have belief things will turn round.

The veteran winger has vowed he and his colleagues must trust themselves to clamber out of their slump.

Burke has been around long enough to have seen bad days as well as good.

At the age of 37, the Rugby Park wideman has been through it all but says it gets no easier.

Killie are going through a torrid period. Just two wins in 12 matches has seen them slide down the Premiership table and led to the departure of their former manager Alex Dyer.

The club are working to find a replacement for the popular Englishman and Burke says it’s been a painful few days to compound a spell that has seen the club hit by Covid as well as lose key players to injury.

He said: “It’s not easy. I have been there a few times, probably more than most in our changing room.

“As a player you feel terrible, you are part of the manager leaving.

“People say the buck stops with the manager but we have to take responsibility as players – we didn’t do enough for him. He’s not just a great guy but he’s a great coach as well.

“I speak for everyone when I say he will be remembered in a successful manner at this club. It’s hard because we all liked him.

“People have been hit harder with this pandemic than others. I know that sounds like an excuse but football is fine margins and we are losing players who have been very influential for us.

“Hopefully we can get them back soon because they will be needed. But in that changing room we still have belief, we’ll stick together and just need to have a great attitude every day in training.

“We need to believe in the process because we have shown in the past we can win matches.”

Killie’s latest setback came as Celtic romped to a 4-0 win at Rugby Park on Tuesday night and they will be desperate to turn things round at St Mirren this weekend.

Burke added: “The manner of the defeat was hard to take but that result won’t define our season.

“We have to put it behind us, start again on Saturday and look forward to the St Mirren match.”
