Chris Barrett delighted to be back to his best after injury-hit few years

Chris Barrett says he’s hugely excited about finally getting back to his best after a couple of injury affected seasons.

The former All-Star has battled back and hamstring problems but reckons he’s finally turned a corner.

The Belmullet man said: “I’m feeling stronger at this time of the year than I’ve felt for a long while to be honest.

"I’m really looking forward to staying injury free for the summer and getting to heights I haven’t got to, or haven’t been able to get to, in the last few years because of injuries.

"I’m really looking forward to the year and seeing to where I can get personally.

“There’s been a lot of frustration there. I mean, in my head, there’s a level I can perform to and not being able to get there, it’s frustrating.

Mayo defender Chris Barrett not concerned about lack of silverware

“I got back in January this year and being able to do a block of training and then being able to play a couple of matches, it’s been great.

"I’m really excited about the year and putting myself in a position I haven’t been able to in a good while.”

Asked when he was last at this peak, Barrett pointed to late 2017 when Mayo came up agonisingly short of Dublin in the Championship for the third time in five seasons.

He said: “I felt even towards the end of 2017 I was still improving, that my fitness was still going up but then last year I only got two or three months of proper training.”
