Chris Ballard trusting his process despite immense salary cap space

The Indianapolis Colts have the most salary cap space in the NFL, but it doesn’t appear so during the initial wave of free agency.

With the legal tampering period well underway, the Colts have brought in just one player: wide receiver Devin Funchess. Most of the big names have already found their new homes on big contracts as general manager Chris Ballard continues to stick with his process.

Despite having all of this money, Ballard is staying true to his word of staying patient in the market. He’s always preached the Colts will look at free agency while placing a certain dollar value on each player available. He does his best not to go over that value.

Even with the most salary cap space in the NFL — over $100 million — Ballard is sticking to his process. He’s not diving into free agency spending recklessly like a kid that has an hour to grab as many toys as he can from the store.

Instead, he’s trusting the research he and his team have put in during the months leading up to the new league year.

Most fans would love to see the Colts sign some of these big name players. However, Ballard has made it clear they will add depth in free agency while building the majority of the roster through the draft, regardless of how much money they have.

Since Ballard took over as general manager in 2017, the Colts have always been a team more active following the initial wave of free agency. It doesn’t mean they are totally conservative with big names, it is simply that they have a value placed on a player, and they rarely go over that.

There might be frustration growing amongst those wishing for more activity, but Ballard is sticking to his process, regardless of how much cash might be at his disposal.
