Chris Ashton withdraws from England World Cup squad to support wife's pregnancy

Chris Ashton has pulled the plug on his World Cup dream to support his wife through the birth of their second child.

The Sale star made the shock announcement yesterday as Eddie Jones’ squad assembled for their first training camp ahead of this autumn’s tournament.

“When I returned from Toulon last season it was for two reasons,” said Ashton, who boasts 20 tries in 44 Tests and was joint top try scorer at the 2011 World Cup. “Firstly for my family and secondly to try and realise the dream of playing for England again.

“Pulling on the white shirt is always special and I’m grateful to Eddie for giving me the opportunity to have done so again.

“My wife, Melissa, is pregnant with our second child and I don’t feel it is right for me to commit to being away in camp at this stage.”

Ashton’s decision comes seven months after he revealed ‘unfinished business’ with the World Cup was fuelling his England comeback mission.

Jones has no plans to replace the 32-year-old despite another of his wings, Jack Nowell, facing a race against time to be fit for Japan.

Ashton said: “I wish Owen and the boys all the very best with their preparation over the coming months.”
