Rutgers fires head coach Chris Ash. Who would be the right fit?
Rutgers has fired head coach Chris Ash following the 52-0 loss to Michigan on Saturday.
Ash went 8-32 as the Rutgers head coach and just 3-26 in Big Ten play in just over three seasons. All three of his wins in conference play came in the 4-8 2017 season, and he had just six wins over FBS teams and two that finished with winning records.
Tight ends coach Nunzio Campanile will take over before the Maryland game next week.
So who are five hot coaching options who might be a fit to take over next year?
Dave Aranda, LSU defensive coordinator
He might be thinking a wee bit bigger than this and he isn’t likely to be too interested in walking into a nearly impossible situation, but even with a big price tag – he’s already making $1.3 million as the LSU DC – he’ll be one of the hot prospects this offseason.
Luke Fickell, Cincinnati head coach
The former one-year Ohio State head coach quickly turned around the Bearcats with an 11-2 2018 season and a good 3-1 start. He’s a Big Ten head coach working in the AAC.
Jim Leonhard, Wisconsin defensive coordinator
The Badger defense is among the best in the country with Leonhard the next in the line of the school’s top coordinators. He’s a rising star.
Mike Norvell, Memphis head coach
Can anyone get the soon-to-be 38-year-old before Virginia Tech does? He has created the fast, dangerous style of offense that’s giving just about everyone fits, going 30-14 so far with two AAC West titles.
Steve Sarkisian, Alabama offensive coordinator
The former USC and Washington head coach is the latest head of the Alabama offensive machine. This gig would be on par with Mike Locksley getting the Maryland job.
