Chris Armas responds to infamous story about Sir Alex Ferguson meeting at Manchester United

Former Manchester United assistant Chris Armas has refuted reports about his infamous encounter with Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ralf Rangnick was appointed interim manager of United in November and he brought Armas to the club as his assistant coach. The pair failed to inspire improvement from the squad and they both left their respective positions at the end of the season.

There was genuine shock and interest from America when Rangnick appointed Armas as his assistant. Armas had just been sacked at Toronto after suffering the largest loss of the club's history and he had also been sacked at the New York Red Bulls.

Armas' record was also the subject of interest when a report in the Athletic claimed Ferguson was less than impressed with Armas' record when the pair met. It was claimed Arma had reeled off his CV to Ferguson, to which the Scot reportedly replied: "You'll need more than that here, son."

The American has now opened up on his encounter with Ferguson at Old Trafford, strongly denying the claims.

"I met him [Ferguson] once and it was my first game there, Young Boys," Armas told The Crack Podcast. "It was the last game of the group stage, our team was through. I couldn't be down on the bench, I wasn't in the bubble [Covid-19] yet.

"I'm sitting with the manager's partner and Sir Alex had asked to meet me and her. They asked if I wanted to meet Sir Alex, the legendary Sir Alex, I've read the books! I went into his suite and thought it was just going to be Sir Alex, but there were like 10 people.

"So I stood by the door and let her go. I thought to myself, I didn't want to overstep, but then everyone looks my way and I go around the room and said hello, I introduced myself. The last person that I spoke to was Sir Alex.

"I said 'Sir Alex, what an honour to meet you, I promise I will give everything to try honour the work that you've done' and he goes 'yeah, it's a lot of work to do, it's great that you're here and if you need anything let us know'.

"That was it and it was a highlight. To meet him at Old Trafford, for this kid from Long Island, was special. Sadly, at the end of the season, something comes out in the media - the season is over guys - and something comes out that says 'Ferguson met Chris Armas and said 'you have to have a better resume than Chicago Fire and Toronto, you have to do better than that son'. What does that even mean?

"It was an incredible lie, it's not even true, we didn't talk about that. The season's done, and it's not even true, what are you saying that for?"
