Chopstix is set to move into one of the empty units in Swansea’s Oxford Street

A popular noodle bar which has locations across the UK looks set to move into one of the empty units at the heart of Swansea's city centre.

Chopstix is looking to open its third Welsh restaurant at the vacant unit at 260 Oxford Street. It already has restaurants in Bridgend and Cardiff.

Threadneedle Property Unit Trust, based in London, has asked Swansea Council for planning permission to transform the empty unit from retail use to food and drink, and has named the restaurant as the intended tenant.

Documents submitted with the plans read: "A specific operator, Chopstix, intends to operate as a fast service restaurant including the sale of hot food and drink for consumption on and off the premises."

On its website, Chopstix said its stores were "focused on delivering fresh, nutritious and tasty Pan Asian meals made from the best ingredients, including Halal certified chicken." And it adds: "Our innovative fusion recipes provide a tastier quick service, value for money option for our time strapped customers."

If permission is granted by city planners, it will become the second fast food chain to move into Oxford Street in recent months, following on from Taco Bell, which has moved into the long-time empty unit which was once home to Halifax.

But the application argues that the introduction of another food and drinks unit would not "unduly dilute the retail function of Oxford Street", adding "it is clear from the existing operators that this part of Swansea is predominantly retail."

It's not the only activity along the city's main shopping street, as Swansea Council has also announced plans to relocate the main library to the unit which currently houses What!

There's also a plan in the works to turn 264 and 265 Oxford Street, along with 8 Portland Street, into a new coffee shop and retail unit, along with 11 flats.

Chopstix has been contacted for comment.
