A 45-year-old man working on the Snowy 2.0 project pulled himself out of the wreckage of the helicopter he was flying after it crashed in a remote part of Kosciuszko National Park.
The man suffered head injuries after the crash in bushland about 2:30pm this afternoon.
The helicopter caught fire after the crash, but it is understood the man, who was described by his employer as an "experienced pilot", was able to pull himself out of the chopper before rescuers arrived and escaped any life-threatening injuries.
The man was flying as part of geotechnical preparations for the 2.0 project.
A Snowy Hydro emergency response team landed nearby on Lobs Hole Ravine Road and a doctor and a paramedic were dropped at the scene.
The pilot has since been flown to Canberra Hospital and is now undergoing treatment.
It is understood the crash occurred near the south eastern shore of Lake Talbingo.
Snowy Hydro corporate affairs general manager Stephanie McKew said the man worked for local company Heli Surveys, and was contracted to do work for Snowy Hydro 2.0 project.
She said the rescue process in the remote area was "challenging".
"There was limited [mobile] reception in the area, so it was difficult," she said. "But I can confirm the man's family has been notified."
The cause of the crash is not yet known.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) said it would send a team of four to the crash site tomorrow morning to investigate.
It said on-ground team would assess the wreckage and interview any witnesses.
The ATSB confirmed the helicopter involved in the crash was a large single-engine UH-1H helicopter, commonly used by the Royal Australian Air Force up until 1989.
