Cholet blast: Boy, 7, and his sister killed as firework explodes into crowd at display

An seven-year-old boy and his sister have been killed after a firework exploded into a crowd during a display in France to celebrate Bastille Day.

Emergency services have rushed to the scene in Cholet where people were celebrating the event on July 14, that marked the start of the French Revolution.

There are around 15 fire engines at the display and there are social media reports of serious injuries.

A video shows people watching the fireworks followed suddenly by a rocket exploding towards the crowd.

There are shouts and screams as people run away.

A seven-year-old boy and his sister aged 24 have been killed, while another person is believed to be seriously injured.

France 3 Pays de la Loire posted on Facebook that the siblings "were near the Cholet football stadium, about 30 meters from the fireworks scene and were hit at around 23:05 pm this Thursday, July 14, by fireworks that 'malfunctioned' according to Angers Prosecutor Eric Bouillard.

"They passed away. A 3rd person is in serious condition and has been transferred to a large burn unit.

"Maine and Loire Departmental Security has been entrusted with the investigation."

People on social media have offered their condolences after the fireworks display turned to tragedy.

One person tweeted: "My thoughts go out to this 8-year-old boy and his 25-year-old sister, to their family, they both passed away tonight during the #Cholet fireworks! The national holiday will never be the same for the victims of this terrible accident."

Similarly another wrote: "My God, this is horrible!!!

"Courage to the loved ones to lose 2 children at the same time .. This is supposed to be a festive moment and turns into a nightmare. Sincere condolences to the family."

Others also complained about the lack of safety and security at the event.

One person tweeted: "Only 30 meters between the fireworks and the public. Maybe the regulations, I don't know, but a radius of 30m really seems too little to me."
