'Chocolate and puzzles are key to long life,' says EK centenarian

A little bit of what you fancy does you good and for Alice Archer indulging in her love of chocolate has helped her celebrate her 100th birthday.

The Whitehills Care Home resident was surrounded by family and friends for the extra-special birthday bash.

The Provost of South Lanarkshire, Ian McAllan, also popped by with a card from Her Majesty the Queen – with a piper also on hand to mark the landmark occasion.

Alice was born on June 14, 1919 to Mary and John Hislop and grew up with her sister Mary and brother John in the Anderston area of Glasgow.

She attended Cargill Convent School in Garnethill and left when she was 14.

The family moved to Townhead in Glasgow and she worked as a machinist.

Alice married John Wright at the age of 22 in the midst of the Second World War and had one son – Graham – but John sadly passed away. However, Alice found love again when she re-married John Archer and had a boy and two girls – David, Rosemary and Jennifer.

At the age of 42, the family moved to Rockhampton Avenue in Westwood and were among the first to settle in the infant new town of East Kilbride.

Alice – who has five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren – stayed in Westwood, but moved to Whitehills Care Home four months ago.

She said: “I always loved doing crosswords and bought puzzle books every week. I also enjoy embroidery and eating chocolate.”

Provost McAllan, who was joined by South Lanarkshire’s Depute Lieutenant Clare Gallagher, said: “It was a delight to meet Alice and to hear all about her life.

“Alice and John brought their family to the infant new town some 58 years ago.

“They were among the pioneers taking the big step of moving out of the city and it was strong and caring families like theirs that helped build the modern community of East Kilbride.”
